Ad Hoc Fiction: “Concrete Souls”

Concrete Soul

I plant my strong, muscular foot upon the driveway.

Today’s the day. Today, I leave the sanctuary of my home, my family, my world, packed up and pushing for pastures new.

I’m usually a creature of comfort, so this dynamism is new to me. I’m real laid back, friends say I can, at times, be a slog. I warn them: “you are one vowel away from a serious beating, sucker”.

I guess I’m just one of life’s great plodders.

But things changed recently. Sammy’s new boyfriend moved in. Giving it the big one. Muscling in on my patch, my turf.

So I’m outta here. As fast as I can. Everyone will know, they’ll be sorry, I’ve left a trail in my wake.

Something looms before me, shadowing my entire being.

I see a soul. A sole.

I retract back into my shell …
